Introduction
On June 6, 1944, the mission of the 2nd battalion of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment was to take Saint-Côme-du-Mont. An officer mustered 150 men and tried to seize the town of Les Droueries, where the Germans seemed entrenched whilst a medic post was settled in the church at Angoville-au-Plain. Over subsequent days the village changed hands three times between the German and American forces, and each time the US Medics, Robert E. Wright and Kenneth J. Moore of 2nd battalion, 501st PIR of 101st Airborne were ministering to the wounded of three nationalities, US paratroopers, French civilians, including the life of a young girl and German soldiers. This undoubtedly saved their lives because at each exchange German soldiers entered the church.
What can be seen today?
Surprisingly little has changed in the village since 1944, but on the 60th anniversary of the Landings, Robert E Wright was flown from the States to attend a very special ceremony to be publicly thanked outside the church he had not seen since 1944.
This is an exceptionally moving and special site – two commemorative windows have been inaugurated in the ancient church which is now in receipt of much needed funds for repairs and renovation by the kind donations from visitors.
